In Ms. Dove’s art room at Richard J. Bailey Elementary School, 6th graders explored the world of pottery with both pottery wheels and hand-building techniques. They transformed lumps of clay into bowls, mugs, and vases, using their hands and tools to create stunning works of art. Whether spinning clay on a wheel or crafting unique forms by hand, students discovered the joy of shaping something from scratch.
“This was all about learning by doing,” said Ms. Dove. “The goal was for the kids to have fun and develop confidence in their artistic abilities.” After shaping their pieces, students glazed and fired them, adding vibrant finishes that made their creations both beautiful and functional. With every project, these young artists explored their creativity, built skills, and gained a deeper appreciation for the arts.
This hands-on pottery class exemplifies how the district seamlessly weaves art into its curriculum to promote Social Emotional Learning and enrichment practices. By engaging in meaningful, creative activities, students build confidence, express themselves, and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Although the school district's annual art show is still months away, we can’t wait to see these incredible masterpieces take center stage!
